Healthy habits start early, and so does a child's comfort at the dentist. A good first visit can shape how your child feels about dental care for years.
At Agoura Dental Group, kids receive pediatric dental care from our in-house pediatric dentist, Dr. Matthew Ferrin. Pediatric dentists have extra training in children's growth, behavior, and dental needs. Because our whole team works in one office, the entire family can get care in one place. Here's what parents in Agoura Hills should know.
When should my child first see a dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by your child's first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. That may sound early, but baby teeth can get cavities as soon as they appear.
Early visits help us spot problems before they grow. They also give your child time to get used to the sights and sounds of a dental office while nothing hurts.
Why baby teeth matter
Baby teeth fall out, so it's easy to think they don't matter much. But they do a lot of work:
- They help your child chew and get good nutrition
- They help your child learn to speak clearly
- They hold space for adult teeth to come in straight
- Untreated cavities can cause pain, infection, and missed school
Tooth decay is one of the most common long-term health problems in children, and it's almost always preventable.
What happens at your child's first visit
The first visit is short and relaxed. For very young children, it often happens with your child sitting on your lap. Dr. Ferrin will:
- Gently check your child's teeth, gums, and jaw
- Look for early signs of cavities
- Clean the teeth if needed
- Talk with you about brushing, fluoride, diet, and habits like thumb sucking or pacifier use
- Answer your questions
How to prepare your child
- Keep your words positive and simple, like "The dentist will count your teeth"
- Avoid words like "shot," "hurt," or "pain"
- Read a picture book about going to the dentist
- Schedule the visit at a time of day when your child is usually rested
- Bring a favorite toy or blanket
Services we offer for kids
- Checkups and cleanings
- Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel
- Dental sealants to protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth

Tips for healthy teeth at home
- Wipe your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings
- Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears
- Use a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste for children under 3, and a pea-sized amount for ages 3 to 6
- Help your child brush until they can do it well on their own, usually around age 7 or 8
- Start flossing once two teeth touch
- Don't put your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals
Growing up with one dental team
As your child grows, their needs change. Around age 7 is a good time for a first orthodontic check. Read more in our guide to children's orthodontics. At Agoura Dental Group, your child can see our pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and general dentists in one place. Parents can book their own care here too, so the whole family stays on one schedule.
Frequently asked questions
How often should my child see the dentist?
Most children should have a checkup and cleaning every six months. Some kids with a higher risk of cavities may need visits more often.
Are dental X-rays safe for kids?
Yes. We only take X-rays when needed, and today's digital X-rays use very low amounts of radiation.
What if my child has a dental emergency?
Call us right away at (818) 706-2727. If a baby tooth is knocked out, don't try to put it back. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the top, not the root, and keep it in milk. See our emergency dentist guide for more.
Do you accept insurance for children's dental care?
Yes. We accept most PPOs and Medi-Cal, and most plans cover preventive visits for kids. We also offer in-house discount plans and financing. See our insurance and financing pages.
